Do What You Say

Before I started a construction-related company a while back, I had been investing in and building real estate projects for many years.  During those years I had an observation that stuck with me.  That observation was - in the simplest of terms - many businesspeople I encountered “don’t do what they say they’re going to do”! 

Who of us out there have never experienced this? You’ve probably heard it: “I’ll be there Tuesday at 8am” …. Only to find that on Tuesday, there was a no show, with no call, text or e-mail explaining why.  Then you try to call them … no answer …  you text ... no response … you e-mail – no response. Makes you crazy!  We’ve all been there, haven’t we?

I made the decision when I started that company that I would do everything possible to create a company where every employee understood how critical it is to do what you say you’re going to do!  And I made a deep commitment to deliver on that promise.  It is clear that if a businessperson (or any small business owner) is credible, the customer (and everyone else for that matter) will benefit in many ways, life will be simpler, and much more pleasant! That company I started became successful and still is – the commitment of doing what we say plays no small part in the achievement of that success.

This principle applies to any business, small or large, no matter what the industry. Every Small Business should pledge to deliver and create a culture around this simple concept:     Do what you say you’re going to do!  There is a difference between companies and there are clear benefits to working with companies that are sincerely committed to core values like this. In fact, simply do what you say you’re going to do – it’s a good way to live your life!
